One Day Less for Me to Be
Originally written July 15, 2006.
Here’s a rambling blog based primarily on a single line from the lyrics of a song by Poor Man’s Riches (see post entitled “More to Life”). We’ll see where it goes.
The line is “One day less for me to be” – in context talking about how someone can see a new sunrise and see a new day being born but all they can think about is how they are one day closer to death. One day less for me to be alive, to be here, to be conscious.
I get these feelings on occasion – do you? For me, these feelings come when I think that I am not doing what I should be doing with my life – I feel like I’m wasting my time. I know I’ve talked about this topic somewhat in the past, so this goes along with it.
Are these feelings helpful or harmful? I can see both a positive and negative aspect. Negatively, these feelings can lead to depression and sadness as every day passes and you don’t feel good about yourself. But positively, because these feelings keep me from getting complacent with my life. Whenever I feel like time is passing me by too quickly, I get driven to change my life and do something about it.
Sometimes I think that life would be easier if I lived during the time of a great war and I was a soldier – especially in years past where soldiering had more to do with physical ability than technological superiority. But when fighting in a big war, you can be convinced that you are offering your life for a cause that is bigger than yourself. If any soldiers are reading this right now, please comment although I don’t recommend spending too much time thinking about the justification of any war you might be fighting today, as you might decide that you’re not offering your life for such a good cause.
Anyways, without a war or some major calamity happening, it’s a lot harder to figure out what to do with life that is really important, or really life changing.
But on the plus side, at least I’m still trying to figure it out. Still trying to make the world a better place.
Are you?
